American Bob Tail Cats

Though there are many breeds of cats all around us, some cats are very uncommon and not very easy to find. Among these rare kinds of cats is the American Bobtail. American Bobtail is a very uncommon and a relatively new breed of cat. This breed appeared some time in the 1960’s. This cat is famous for its stubby bobbed tail, which is one-third to maximum one-fourth of the length of a tail of a normal cat. This kind of tail is due to the genetic mutation, which affects only the tail. The American Bob Tail is not similar to the Japanese Bob Tail though the physical appearance of both the cats is the same. The gene mutation of both the cats is very different because the gene causing the tail of the American Bob is dominant, whereas in Japanese Bob, it is recessive.

This breed of cat is very sturdy, having both long and shorthaired coats. The coat of this kind of cats is not fluffy or dense, but is very shaggy. These cats have eyes and fur of just about any color, but it has a wild tabby kind of appearance.

The development of American Bob Tail cats is not like other breeds. They take a minimum of one to two years to be matured and developed. This rate is very slow in comparison to the other breeds. Even in appearance, this cat is different from other feline species. The body of the cat is moderate and more or less substantial. The fore legs are normally shorter than the hind legs, with large and round feet. The size of the head is quite proportionate to the body. The noses are gently sloped and wide, and the jaws are very strong. The ears are of medium size with round tips. The eyes are almond shaped and equally proportionate to the head.

According to different legends, this breed of cat was formed as a cross between bobcat and tabby cat. The unusual size of the tail of the cat is due to the random and spontaneous mutation of the population of the domestic cats. The American Bob Tail cat was recognized by the International Cat Association in 1989. This breed is also accepted in different kinds of international championships.

The personality of a cat is a very important factor in domesticity. According to the cat activity scale - 1(serene and calm) to 10 (over active) – American Bob Tail cat can be placed between 7 and 8. According to the breeders who keep information about this breed, this breed of cat is very playful in nature; they are also very friendly with others, and the most important thing is that they are very energetic and extremely intelligent. These cats resemble dogs in many ways. They often greet their masters by standing and licking their masters at the door. They have great tolerance and are usually patient; they don’t get angry very quickly. Even if children pick them up, and subject them to mishandling, they will not get irritated soon. But they do not like closed rooms and they often try to escape from fastened cages.
