American Curl Cats

In this world, you can find different kinds of cats. Some have large eyes, some have large tails, and there are still others with several kinds of features and peculiarities. There is a breed of cat called the American Curl, which is characterized by its unusual ears. The ears of this breed curl back towards the middle of the back of the skull from the face. This breed was originated in the place called Lakewood in California, and it was formed as a result of a continuous mutation. The American Curl was first exhibited in 1983 at a cat show. There, this long-haired breed was given the status of championship by the International Cat Association.

The size of the American Curl cat is medium, and it weighs 5-10 lbs. It takes 2-3 years to mature to its full size. These cats are very healthy and strong, and are free from different kinds of genetic defects, from which different purebred cats suffer.

American Curl Cats have straight ears at the time of their birth. The ears begin to curl within 10 days. But after four months the ears stop curling, and will become hard and very stiff to touch. Regardless of its name, the American Curl, which is of pet quality, has straight ears. However, the cats for show have curled ears, forming an arc of 90 to 180 degrees. But this kind of cats will be disqualified if their curly ears touch the back of the skulls. There are two kinds of American Curl Cats; they are longhaired and soft haired American Curl cats. These cats have silky and soft coats that lie flat against their soft bodies. They need a regular bath and combing. You need to be extra careful while handling their ears because mishandling may lead to the breaking of the cartilage. So, the ears should not be forced into unnatural positions. These cats require grooming, but they enjoy spending time with their masters. They are basically very soft and elegant animals with remarkable ears.

Though temperament is very important in all animals, it is even more important for domestic animals. In this respect, the Curl Cat is a favored breed since it has the temperament of companionship and curiosity. They have immense curiosity for every thing, and they like the company of others. They are people oriented, and for that reason, they like to help their masters in all kinds of household works. They also delight in bumping their heads with their masters or with any other acquaintance. Though the Curls are very intelligent and fully tempered, yet they retain their kitten type attitude throughout their life. They remain silent in comparison to the other breeds, but if they are in need of something or they want your attention, then they will tell you through their actions. American Curls have a great ability to adjust themselves with any situation, and they adjust with other animals very remarkably.

So if you want a Curl you may opt for them, but try to buy the kittens at an early age of not more than 3- 4 months.
