Cats and dogs are alike in some ways. They need
rabies shots, trips to the vet, and you to feed and water them. For the
most part you need to do most essential things for them. But where they
differ is when it comes to what they are willing to do for you. Dogs
are easily trainable, for a snack or even a pat on the head. Cats will
usually look at you and let you know they should just be given the
snack, without the trick.
Cats can be trained. You just need to have the right cat supplies, and patience, to get through the training process.
The
first of the cat supplies you will need are some tasty treats. You are
going to teach your cat to come to you. And you are going to go about
this training in much the same way you would with a dog. You are going
to let your cat know you have a treat, sit down on the ground and call
his name and say the word 'come'. This could take a while. Frankly he
may not even look at you the first few times. The hope is the treat
will be enough to get his attention and have him come over to collect.
If he does, give him a lot of petting and praise. If he doesn't, just
put the treat away and try again another time. If you get frustrated
and yell at him, you are only encouraging him to stay away.
You
may learn your cat is not responding to treats. Some respond to other
cat supplies, such as toys or brushes for a petting, better. Try
different things until you get the results you are hoping for.
Cats
like to chew on things. Depending on the day it could be anything that
gets their attention that they will dig their teeth into.
Unfortunately, all too often it is a power cord. This is not just a bad
habit, but could be a potentially dangerous or even a deadly one if the
cat is allowed to chew on the cord too long and gets down to the wire.
Your cat could either be electrocuted, or may expose enough wire that
it could start your home on fire. You need to act as soon as you see
this habit starting. In the cat supplies section of your local pet
store you will find a number of options to do the trick. There are
mixtures made of cayenne pepper, or other hot sauces. Dabbing a little
of this on the area your cat likes to chew will make for a not so tasty
treat the next time he tries. After a few times of getting a burning
mouth, most cats learn this is not somewhere they want to bite down
anymore.
If this fails you may need to find enclosed tubes for
your electrical wires, so your cat can't get to them. While it will be
a great success if you do train your cat, don't be too angry if you
can't get him to do what you want. Not all cats want to be trained, and
some are just too stubborn to give in.
