Cat Training Use Small StepsThrough effective cat training, cats are able to learn basic tasks. However, understanding their psychology is very important. Unlike dogs who will fetch a ball or a stick for an entire afternoon, your typical cat training or cat play session might only last for 5 to 10 minutes, as they have shorter attention spans and actually get bored. However, just like dogs, cats respond well to praise, and rewards that appeal to their stomachs!
Cats are intelligent enough to be taught how to use the household human facilities. If the owner wishes to take the time to train them, it will take a lot of patience, and the understanding that most can be successfully trained. They may have been taught by their mother to scratch in litter, sand, or soil, but they will learn to love the clean facility.
Older cats can be trained to use the potty, but of course kittens pick up this skill more readily than those who have long-established litterbox habits. Homemade training systems can work well, and kitten training kits are also commercially available. The cat urine odors can be brought under control with the addition of lemon juice or vinegar to the water.
The first step is to put the box in the proximity of the toilet. Then, week by week, raise the box a little. The box must remain on a solid support, and not "wobble". Soon enough, the box will be even with your toilet. Now you can move the box over to the toilet. All that remains is to get your pet familiar with standing on the seat.
Take a heavy-duty foil turkey roaster pan, and securely tape it under the seat onto the toilet base. Initially, put a bit of litter in the bottom of the pan under the seat hole. As he gets used to this, you can place a progressively larger hole in the tray, until he needs to stand on the toilet seat. Always leave the seat lid up so he can get at his facility.
Cat training is more successful when started as a kitten. Cats can be trained to walk on a leash as dogs do. When beginning this training you must be patient and keep the walks limited to short distances. Cats need to be given a bit of leeway to explore when going on these walks. If you have gone too far you may have to carry the cat home if they are too tired. As with dogs, it is important to give your cat praise each time he or she listens when you call their name.
Cats are actually able to learn some basic tasks, but understanding their psychology is important. Therefore, cat training is important. If you have the desire and patience you can teach your cat to use the human toilet. There are special potty training kits for kitten training, but a simple handmade system will work just as well. If you add a very small amount of vinegar or lemon juice to the water it will help to minimize the strong cat urine smell. Some owners even teach their cat to walk along at the same time as the dog goes for a walk.
