If you get your cat from a shelter or another home,
it probably has been trained by it's mother. But kittens that aren't so
lucky come to you before that.
What you do at first is simply let
the cat get know the area of the box. Put your cats feet into the
litter. I had to go through a few kinds of litter, to find the best one
for my two cats. It happend to be the 'Scented Fresh Step scoopables-
but not all cats like a different scent of their own.
When we got
our second cat Isla, she could not stand Sammi's (our other cat) odor,
so it took a while until she got used to his scent. Until then, we kept
the litter box very clean for her.
What ever you and your cat
favors, the most important thing is to clean it at least once everyday,
sometimes even more if needed.
The main attributes we found Fresh Step brand has over the others are:
- Much better clumping occurs (other brands the clumps would fall apart).
- There is no bad smell around as long as we keep it clean.
To give you guys a few good tips about litter box housekeeping:
- Get the economy 28lb plastic box.
- Once it's empty cover it with two plastic bags, like what you do to a trash can.
- This is a cheap way to clean your cats litter box quickly and easily, use it as a sealed litter trash container.
- Clean your cats litter box at least once a week.. yes WITH soap to make it sparkle clean, your cat WILL appreciate that.
Another great tip for traveling owners who can't take their cats with them...
We
had to leave the cats once for 4 days straight and our main concern is
what to do with an over flowing litter box? Many people find themselves
in the same position, and just ask a neighbor or a friend to check up
on the cats. We did the same thing but for the sake of the cats we also
got an extra big litter box, so they had two litter boxes between two
cats. Also, we left them an extra bowl of food.
The same time our
neighbor were watching our cats, she was doing the same favor for
another neighbor. From what she said, the other family left only one
litter box for 3 cats! The minute she came through the front door of
the house she could smell an awful stench. All I'm saying is.. it only
takes getting a box for your cats to feel your love, and not suffer a
week full of doodoo.
The essential points to cat litter box training at an early age is to:
- Let them know where the litter box is.
- Show their paws they can dig in(no pun intended), until they know what for.
- Always make sure a kitten knows where the litter box is
After
your cat is a trained litter box goer, your main responsibility now is
just to keep it clean. Form a habit of checking up on their litter box
at least twice a day, morning and evening. This will just strengthen
the bond and make your cat appreciate you even more than it does. I
hope this information helped you a bit.
