What image does the word ‘cat’ draw in your mind? Is it something with a furry and soft body and a densely bushy tail? If so, then let your imagination come true by having a Somali cat as a pet in your household. The Somali cats are one of the long haired Abyssinian breeds of cats that came into being naturally in the 1950s. These cats are characterized by their long and fluffy coats and bottle brush tails.

The most interesting thing about the Somali cats is that they are not like the cats of some other breeds in the sense that they are what they appear to be. The nature and the behavior of these cats can well be comprehended if they are observed. There is nothing in their appearance and airs that can mislead you.

The Somali cats are excessively long haired. They need to be groomed properly on a regular basis. These cats are marked by their habit of not shedding hairs throughout the year, like most of the other long haired cats. It is only once or twice in a year that the coat of these cats is blown.

The ruddy coat and the bushy tail of the Somali cat give it the look of a fox. They are, therefore, nicknamed as ‘fox cat’. You will also be able to see a black stripe down the back of the cat giving it the exact fox look. The structure of the ears of these cats is very interesting. They are placed on their heads in such a way that they look exactly like the English alphabet M.

The Somali cats are active by nature. They are also intelligent and playful. They are very curious also. You should not at all be astonished if you find them walking behind you all the time when you have something in your hand that they are not familiar with.

The Somali cats may be active, but that does not necessarily indicate that these are outdoor cats. On the contrary, these cats prefer staying indoors. Nevertheless, it is really a pleasure to take them out for a walk. When you take a Somali cat out for a walk you will be impressed by good road sense.

Since these cats are intelligent and they are also very fond of companions, they cannot stay alone. What is even more extraordinary is that they feel the acuteness of loneliness more than the other cats. If you find that your Somali cat is staying alone while you are busy at your work, think of a companion for it. You may also make them happy with toys. They are intelligent and playful enough to play interesting games with these toys.

You do not have to bother much on what to feed the cats if you have a Somali cat. They have normal food habits. They are also friendly and obedient with the children and the other pets. They treat all the members of the family almost equally. Let any of the members of the family return home, you will find your cat welcoming him or her warmly.
