Tonkinese Cats

Tonkinese 2 Medium.jpg
Among the innumerable varieties of cats all around us, there are the Tonkinese cats. The Tonkinese is a medium size cat like the Siamese and the Himalayan cats. The Tonkinese cats have emerged recently. These cats are also called by the name of Tonks. These are crossbreed cats of Burmese and the Siamese breeds of cats. Many people say that the Tonkinese breed of cats has been around since the early nineteenth century. Dr Joseph Thompson imported a small cat called Wing Mau. Its color was much like walnut. This cat was exported to California in 1930.

These cats resemble the Siamese cats. Some Siamese cat breeders also breed the Tonkinese cats. The triangular head was developed by these breeders to differentiate the Tokinese cats from other types of cats. The name of the cat is not derived from the region of Indo China called Tonkin. These cats rather owe the origin of their names to the reference of a region of the South Pacific. There was however a confusion regarding the nomenclature of this breed of cats and they were thought to have got their names from that Indo-Chinese region of Tonkin.

These cats are slim and muscular. Although they do not appear to be, they are quite heavy, and this is mainly because of their muscular bodies. Their heads are wedge shaped. They are intelligent and affectionate towards people. They are curious and very fond of playing games. They however are not at all hyperactive. In case they are left alone and they feel lonely, they may turn out to be very mischievous. You will have to make arrangements so that it does not get bored. You can use a cat tree or something like that for keeping these cats occupied.

Tonkinese cats love heights and it has often been seen that the cats jump onto your shoulder from a high point. These cats are less demanding. In this regard, they have more similarities with the Burmese cats than the Siamese cats. The voice of these cats is also less rasping or piercing. It is more soothing to the ears. Many owners feel that the Tonkinese cats combine the best points of their ancestors.

The Tonkinese cats come in so many different colors. To be precise, they can be of twelve different colors. The body also shows different patterns. Solid, mink, and pointed, and mink are the three dominant patterns of these cats. There are many subtle variations in the colors and there are variations on the coat as the cat grows older. Tonkinese cats can give birth to four kittens but the number may vary to 5 or 6 kittens. These are some of the characteristics of the Tonkinese cats. The gold or green are the characteristics of the solid Tonkinese cats. The cats with pointed patterns have blue eyes, and the mink cats are characterized by the color aquamarine. The Tonkinese cats are quite popular with people who love cats and want to keep them as pets.
