In about the 1900s these cats were used in breeding programs in Persia. The Persian breed became very popular but the Turkish Angora was not found. In the 1950s, some Turkish Angoras were taken to the US from the zoo of Ankara. This marked a series of new programs of breeding. The Cat Fanciers Association registered the white version of this breed during the year 1968 and the colored version came in 1978. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy does not recognize this breed of cat. It also holds in terms of the leading British cat breed organizations. Other places in Europe, however, recognize it.
